Cotton Harvest in Lubbock Gets Going
Delayed by recent wet weather, the cotton harvest in the nation’s densest cotton-growing region is now underway. A spokesperson for PYCO Industries, a major crushing and cottonseed oil manufacturing facility in Lubbock, Texas, says he expects the harvest to be only half of last year’s. Inclement summer weather and a recent freeze are largely to blame. However, thanks to carryover seed, there will be enough products to keep the crush steady and help meet demand for cottonseed oil.

Cottonseed Crush Expected to Remain Steady
Following today’s release of The World Agriculture Supply and Demand Estimates report from USDA, the National Cottonseed Products Association has predicted a modest increase in the cottonseed crush. The estimated 4.71 million tons of cottonseed (compared to last month’s estimate of 4.68 million tons) combines with ballooning stocks to set the stage for a crush of 2.7 million tons. This figure is about even with last year, despite lower cotton production. Good news for the commercial food industry, which has been demanding higher supplies of trans-fat free cooking oils, like cottonseed oil. - Ben Morgan
