Cottonseed Oil Golden for Vitamin E
A new study from Texas Woman’s University shows that cottonseed oil consumption significantly increases vitamin E intake without increasing fat intake. Study participants ate foods prepared in cottonseed oil, such as Utz potato chips, to boost their daily amount of vitamin E. An adequate daily intake of vitamin E can promote health and may help prevent diseases such as heart disease, some forms of cancer and cognitive decline with age. Cottonseed oil makes history! The History Channel, that is.
The makers of “Modern Marvels” are cooking up a delicious new food show, “Food Tech,” airing this summer. Representatives from the National Cottonseed Products Association worked with the show to help film one of the ten episodes slated for the show’s first season. Titled “Southern Fried,” the episode begins in a restaurant – on a plate of quintessential Southern fried cuisine (fried in cottonseed oil, of course). Host Bobby Bognar, a former chef and self proclaimed “food nerd,” then deconstructs the dishes, tracing back the origins of these Southern staples and skillfully bringing viewers on an adventurous farm-to-plate journey. Part of the episode will feature the cottonseed oil manufacturing process. Stay tuned for air dates! - Tour Manager

Cottonseed oil production predicted to grow
According to the most recent USDA oilseed forecast, cottonseed oil production is expected to be on the rise in 2009/10, even with lower planted acres of cotton. Domestic demand of the oil is expected to surge nearly 20 percent.
The cottonseed crush is forecasted to exceed that of whole seed feedings for the second consecutive year, this time by nearly one million tons. With average cottonseed oil yields of 315 pounds per ton of seed, domestic crushers are expected to produce 835 million pounds of the oil in 2009/10, up from 755 million pounds produced in 2008/09. Spurred by heightened interest in the oil, domestic consumption of cottonseed is expected to reach 690 million lbs, a 19 percent increase from one year ago. - Ben Morgan

Don’t pass over this
Passover begins April 8 at sundown. A religious holiday known for its distinctive foods and oftentimes limited cooking options, Passover has the potential to be tricky for the at-home or beginning chef. Looking for a Kosher for Passover cooking oil? Try cottonseed oil. The oil contains no animal byproducts and originates from the cotton seed rather than one of the five grains that are forbidden during Passover – something that other cooking oils can’t claim. - Tour Manager

2008 a banner year for cottonseed oil
Based on data from the U.S. Census, domestic consumption of cottonseed oil usage may exceed last year by two to five percent. And, in the category of “salad or cooking oil,” cottonseed oil usage grew even more: an eight to ten percent increase is anticipated. Thanks to its high stability and neutral flavor, trans-fat-free cottonseed oil will remain a strong player in the edible oils category in 2009. - Ben Morgan
